How did sports come to dominate our local media?

It goes to show how out of touch some local reporters are with reality. This morning Vince Grippi posted an article on his Spokesman Review blog with the title “Eastern Continues to Dominate Local News Scene.” I clicked on it thinking “Hey maybe our local university is doing something unique” or maybe “they finally solved the downtown center question” but no, it is an article about the on-going debacle with Eastern’s Basketball coach. The situation is definitely an embarrassment, but it is hardly news dominating, and hardly deserves a link on the front page of the Spokesman Review’s website, but unfortunately we see this on almost a daily basis throughout the news here in Spokane, inane little stories which anywhere else would get no coverage, or maybe a bi-line, but here in Spokane they get full articles or full segments in the news.

I’m sorry Vince, but there is no way the coaching situation out at eastern is “news dominating” there are far more important issues in the region that need talking about and sports just isn’t one of them. How about remembering the victims of the Moscow sniper? Or what about that dangerous increase in staph cases in the region? Using terms like “dominate” in reference to sports news is irresponsible of you, and part of the reason why so few people pay attention to important news, news that can actually impact their lives. So please sir, I call on you to not embellish trivial situations, try an alternative, how about “Eastern Coaching Debacle Continues” or how about “Eastern’s Embarrassment Continues?”

Sorry for the rant all, more to come later.
