Thank you for pointing out the failed and racist mentality of the mentality of the Facklers and the Gilchrists of the world. I also enjoy how the "Friendly Neighborhood Council-man" (another courageous blogger hiding behind anonymity) who carelessly throw around the words "border security" and "proper administration of federal law" and every other manner of scare language to intimidate and -- in the case of the fascists in power today -- to shut people up post-911.

That's true, many folks with controversial, bigoted, racist, and unorthodox opinions shield themselves with the First Amendment, but we as a liberal (in the classical sense of the word) American society believe that everyone should be free to air their views and hold it up to public scrutiny and debate. What's disturbing is the knee-jerk reaction to a speech given on the effects of illegal immigration. How is this discussion automatically judged "racist?"

I believe that carelessly throwing around the "r-word" epithet to describe folks concerned with border security and the proper administration of federal law is a blatant attempt to dissuade people from exercising their First Amendment rights. How are we to have a civil discussion on the major issues of the day if we're too busy calling each other names?

"Freedom of Speech" is also a cloak that racists, bigots, and anti-Semitic people hide behind. A wolf in sheeps clothing is still a wolf. Now, regarding John Ahern and the rose colored glasses he wears while scribbling down sound bites from his GOP buddies? Mr. Ahern needs to step out of his comfort zone and reach out to the working class (and there are PLENTY in his district) if he's really concerned about the budget and Spokane.

While I did want to bring up the situation (which like I said was prior to my blog starting) that was not the purpose. I was attempting to point out the fact that Ms. Ball and Mr. Fackler are not ordinary citizens of Spokane. They are leaders in the local GOP, and Ahern is treating people as idiots by presenting them as normal people.

This story's pretty old. Controversial speakers like to draw controversy. I disagreed with the GOP's decision to bring Gilchrist to town, but what if Churchill would have been the keynote speaker for the local Jefferson-Jackson Dinner (or what is the politically correct name for it now)?

Thank G_d (goodness) for the value of freedom of speech...

The City of Spokane is home to large groups of white Christian conservatives, something most liberals in this town already know. Fackler's comments come as no surprise.
