Thank you for pointing out the failed and racist mentality of the mentality of the Facklers and the Gilchrists of the world. I also enjoy how the "Friendly Neighborhood Council-man" (another courageous blogger hiding behind anonymity) who carelessly throw around the words "border security" and "proper administration of federal law" and every other manner of scare language to intimidate and -- in the case of the fascists in power today -- to shut people up post-911.

Dave,

Anything is possible. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone in Washington from going to the polls or organizing for a candidate. Good on you, true believers.

Washington's primary comes just about halfway through the whole process in terms of delegates so it isn't out of the question, though I strongly suspect there will be a de facto Democratic nominee by then.

Every year, the Baptist Church by my house has a block party. When my son was about 6 he wanted to go over because they had games and face painting. We walked over and waited in line at the face painting booth. When it was his turn, he sat down and a woman started, using the same colors and story while painting 1 inch dots on his face. When the woman got to the white dot, she asked my boy if "He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savoir". I was already fed up with the whole thing but before I could grab him and get him away he said to the woman, "I just wanted to get my face painted". I held out my hand, picked him up and put him on my shoulders, and we walked home.

I was never so proud of my son as I was then.

Well! That's exciting. Congrats on your trip. How will you be documenting your interviews, are you taking a film crew along? A pocket audio recorder? Or getting drunk in bars- pubs, excuse me- and trying like all hell in the morning to remember what was said, but ultimately failing, and just making up findings to report? Either way-- enjoy your time there. Scotland is fabulous. England's alright. A bit smelly, to tell you the truth.

Although a very literate post, I have to disagree with your synopsis this time. Freedom is simple enough to understand. It is the ability to think, express, and hope without threat of governmental retaliation.

There is a definate and fine line that should not be crossed. There is an old addage that says something like, "Your rights end where mine begin". That is bunk. In order for true freedom to exist, there has to be no stipulation as to what is and what is not a right. Freedom of the press should be unfettered. Freedom of religion should be something less of a mandate than a personal choice. Freedom of personal expression is unmatched in all of these. If we can voice discontent, then we are truly free.

However, all that happy stuff being said, we also have to realize that we are a people separated by numerous chasms of cultural and personal beliefs. As much as their beliefs disgust me, I must stand by my view that even jihadists, neo-nazi's, and the like have the right to feel how they feel. It is when those thoughts are put into practice that the government should step in.

In the same token, nothing is free. Taanstaafl is my credo.
There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. Rights are protected only by those who do something proactive with them. Passive rights are not freedoms, they are chains.
